Our Philosophy on Culture
TL;DR: One of the cores aspects of our culture is for uizards to have fun spending time together and creating magic. These are our guiding principles to help us intentionally keep the culture that we love as we grow and work towards our mission together.
🧭 We’re values-driven. Our mission is our North Star.
We’re here to change the way design is done and to empower non-designers to be able to design. Our values are what guide how we behave, make decisions, hire (and fire), and improve as a company.
🌍 We’re Remote-first, not friendly.
At Uizard, what we mean by “remote-first” is a company where at least 50% of uizards are working remotely at least 50% of the time.
What does this mean in practice? Here’s the difference:
😍 Remote-first means optimizing for remote work. This is what it looks like...
Live meetings are kept to a minimum, scheduled to include all time zones, and recorded for all.
Key decisions are made online, not at the water cooler, so all relevant uizards are included
Performance is measured by results rather than hours worked
Communication is asynchronous-first
The team is empowered to work remotely
Processes and tools are designed to include all team members equally, regardless of location
People and information are equally accessible to all people
😭 Remote-friendly means office-based uizards and remote uizards are not properly integrated and exist on two different, often unequal, tiers. It looks like this:
Team meetings exclusively occur in a co-located time zone or when convenient to people in the office
Water cooler chat or the office is a space for key decisions and not all relevant uizards are included
Presence is correlated with meaningful work
Communication is synchronous-first
Team members are required to work in the office by default
People and information are more accessible to people in an office
People bias towards promoting office-based uizards
💛 We practice humility and respect, paired with transparency and speaking up.
We can only work towards mastery as individuals when we, as a team, co-create the space for it. At a high level, it means having the space to explore and use our top skills, strengths, and talents. To enable this space, we expect all team members to build strong relationships based on humility and respect. We can learn so much from each other and our ideas alone won’t power the future of design. Differing perspectives are key.
It’s also important to speak up and be transparent. This can be for giving praise (what we call kudos), giving constructive feedback, disagreeing, or suggesting an idea.
📈 We optimize team performance and trust.
Our goal is to create high-performing, trust-based teams that power the future of design by empowering non-designers to design. Here are the five key dynamics that set successful teams apart from other teams (based on Google’s research), that we strive for:
Psychological safety: Can we take risks on this team without feeling insecure or embarrassed?
Dependability: Can we count on each other to do high-quality work on time?
Structure & clarity: Are goals, roles, and execution plans on our team clear?
Meaning of work: Are we working on something that is personally important for each of us?
Impact of work: Do we fundamentally believe that the work we’re doing matters?
😎 We focus on impact and results, not hours.
We all know that tracking hours doesn’t equate output. Extraordinary performance is the ability to deliver high-quality work on time, be a dependable teammate, and create an impact at Uizard that drives us towards our priorities and goals.
With that said, we’re an early startup. There is always more to do. It’s your responsibility to manage your time, energy, and focus effectively. If there’s just too much work, talk with your manager or team to find a solution. Burnout is never the solution.
🧑🎨 Work Towards Communication Mastery and Assume Best Intentions.
Communication is the key to every relationship; it’s an art and a science. We encourage all uizards to continue to improve how they communicate with uizards, our users, partners, and community, as well as understanding when to be available. Sometimes we’ll make mistakes or misinterpret communication. It’s part of being an international team. Assume best intentions and seek to understand.
🌟 Pro tip: Take time to test your current communication skills, learn about high vs low-context communication, and speak with your team to agree on how to communicate effectively with one another, including your preferred working style.
⚖️ Balance asynchronous and synchronous communication.
What’s the difference? Synchronous communication includes every form of communication that happens in real-time. Responses occur immediately. Asynchronous (async) communication includes every form of communication that doesn’t happen in real-time. Responses occur intermittently and can be hours apart.
As a remote team, we strive to strike a balance of the two: mostly asynchronous, with some synchronous communication.
🌟 Benefits of Async-first communication...
Control over the workday = you're happier and more productive. You have almost total control over how you structure your workday, barring live activities like team rituals or meetings to fit your lifestyles, biorhythms, and responsibilities (like childcare 👶).
High-quality, mindful communication versus reactive responses. It's true, async communication is slower, but it tends to be more thoughtful and clear, which reduces the need for back-and-forths. It gives you the time to think through a problem or idea and offer a deeper, higher-quality response.
Better planning leads to less stress. When last-minute requests aren't the default practice, advanced planning is a must. You'll be able to plan your workload and collaborate more intentionally, which leads to higher quality work.
Deep work becomes the default. You can block off chunks of uninterrupted time to do the work that creates the most value for Uizard. You still come back to respond to messages in batches instead of bouncing back and forth between work and messages or meetings. Say goodbye to context switching.
Automatic documentation and greater transparency. When most communication happens in writing, key discussions and important information are documented automatically, making it visible and easily accessible for you.
💛 We still need synchronous communication too... Why?
It builds deeper relationships, especially in-person, and a sense of belonging to a team
It’s important for alignment when it comes to planning and project kickoffs.
It’s the fastest way to solve complex problems.
It’s key to delivering sensitive, constructive feedback. Written feedback can easily be misinterpreted.
It’s the best way to resolve miscommunication or conflict.
